Three powertrains

ES 350h: lexus.com describes a sixth-generation hybrid system pairing a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine with a high-output electric motor, 244 net combined horsepower, and front-wheel or all-wheel drive in Premium and Premium+ trims. It is the only ES rated in mpg.

ES 350e: the first all-electric ES, with front-wheel drive, 221 total system horsepower and an EPA-estimated range of 307 miles, in Premium and Luxury trims.

ES 500e: a dual-motor electric ES with DIRECT4 all-wheel drive and 338 total system horsepower, the most powerful ES lexus.com lists, with an EPA-estimated range of 276 miles, in Premium and Luxury trims. Lexus.com says the 350e and 500e have a native NACS charging port.

Why mileage and range drop in winter

Fueleconomy.gov says conventional gasoline vehicles can expect a 10% to 20% fuel economy loss in city driving and 15% to 33% on short trips in cold weather, and hybrids typically 20% to 40% in city driving and 25% to 45% on short trips. Its reasons:

Cold fluids

Cold engine oil and other drive-line fluids increase friction in the engine and transmission.

Longer warm-up

The engine takes longer to reach its most fuel-efficient temperature, which hurts short trips most.

Heat and defrost

Heated seats, window defrosters and heater fans use extra power.

Tires and air

Tire pressure drops in the cold, and denser cold air adds drag at highway speeds.

Winter gasoline

Winter blends can have slightly less energy per gallon than summer blends.

Battery

Battery performance falls in the cold, which on hybrids also affects regenerative braking.

From fueleconomy.gov's Fuel Economy in Cold Weather page, read November 2, 2026.

Getting closer to the rated numbers

For all-electric models, fueleconomy.gov says fuel economy can drop roughly 39% in mixed city and highway driving in the cold, and range by 41%, with about two-thirds of the extra energy used to heat the cabin. Without the cabin heater, it says EV fuel economy is 8% lower at 20°F than at 75°F and range about 12% lower. It suggests preheating the cabin while the car is plugged in, and using the seat warmers instead of the cabin heater, to extend range.

Fueleconomy.gov's cold-weather advice: park in a warmer place such as a garage, combine trips so you drive less often with a cold engine, keep warm-up idling short (it notes most manufacturers recommend driving off gently after about 30 seconds), use seat warmers and defrosters only as needed, check tire pressure regularly, use the oil your manufacturer recommends for cold weather, and remove roof racks when you are not using them.

Year-round, it says aggressive driving (speeding, rapid acceleration and braking) can lower gas mileage by roughly 15% to 30% at highway speeds and 10% to 40% in stop-and-go traffic, that mileage usually decreases rapidly above 50 mph, and that an extra 100 pounds in a vehicle could reduce mpg by about 1%.

2026 Lexus ES MPG FAQ

What MPG does the 2026 Lexus ES get?

The 2026 ES 350h hybrid is EPA-rated at 48 mpg city, 44 highway and 46 combined with front-wheel drive, and 47 / 42 / 44 with all-wheel drive. The ES 350e and ES 500e are all-electric, so they are rated in MPGe and driving range rather than mpg.

What is the Lexus ES hybrid MPG?

Lexus.com lists 46 mpg combined for the ES 350h with front-wheel drive and 44 mpg combined with all-wheel drive, both EPA-estimated. Fueleconomy.gov's 2026 records show the same combined figures, with 48 city / 44 highway (FWD) and 47 city / 42 highway (AWD).

Does the ES 350h come with all-wheel drive?

Yes. Lexus.com offers the ES 350h with front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive in both Premium and Premium+ trims. All-wheel drive lowers the combined rating from 46 to 44 mpg.

How far can the ES 350e and ES 500e go on a charge?

Lexus.com lists an EPA-estimated driving range of 307 miles for the ES 350e and 276 miles for the ES 500e. Fueleconomy.gov's records show those figures for the 19-inch-wheel versions; with 21-inch wheels they are 292 miles (350e) and 272 miles (500e).

What is the MPGe of the ES 350e and ES 500e?

Fueleconomy.gov rates the ES 350e at 127 MPGe combined with 19-inch wheels and 121 with 21-inch wheels, and the ES 500e AWD at 114 MPGe combined with 19-inch wheels and 112 with 21-inch wheels.

Does the ES 350h need premium gas?

The fueleconomy.gov records for the 2026 ES 350h and ES 350h AWD both name premium gasoline. The owner's manual and fuel-door label of a specific vehicle give its fuel requirement.

Why is my ES's mileage or range lower in winter?

Fueleconomy.gov says hybrids typically lose 20% to 40% of their fuel economy in city driving in cold weather, and that EV range can drop by about 41% in mixed driving, mostly because of cabin heating. Colder fluids, longer warm-ups, lower tire pressure, winter fuel blends and reduced battery performance also play a part.
