Miles per gallon. From fueleconomy.gov (U.S. EPA and Department of Energy) records for the 2026 Lexus RX, read November 2, 2026: the RX 350 versions are 2.4L turbocharged four-cylinders with an 8-speed automatic, the RX 350h a 2.5L four-cylinder hybrid with a continuously variable automatic, and the RX 500h a 2.4L turbocharged hybrid with a 6-speed automatic. On that date fueleconomy.gov listed no 2027 RX and no RX 450h+ record; the 2027 ratings lexus.com quotes for these four versions match the 2026 records.

Four powertrains

RX 350: lexus.com lists a 2.4-liter turbocharged in-line four with 275 horsepower, offered with front-wheel drive (Premium, Premium+, Luxury and F SPORT Design) or all-wheel drive (those four plus F SPORT Handling). AWD costs 1 mpg in city, highway and combined ratings.

RX 350h: an in-line four hybrid with 246 net combined horsepower and all-wheel drive on all four trims, rated at 37 mpg city, 34 highway and 36 combined. It is the most fuel-efficient RX measured in mpg.

RX 450h+: a plug-in hybrid with 304 net combined horsepower and all-wheel drive, in Premium and Luxury trims. Lexus.com describes it as offering all-electric driving for shorter trips and hybrid operation for longer journeys, and lists an 85 MPGe estimate. MPGe is a different measure from mpg, so it is not a like-for-like comparison with the other RX models.

RX 500h F SPORT Performance: a 2.4-liter turbo in-line four hybrid with electric front and rear motors, 366 net combined horsepower and DIRECT4 all-wheel drive. Lexus.com lists 0-60 mph in 5.9 seconds and 27 mpg combined.

Why your RX's MPG drops in winter

Fueleconomy.gov says conventional gasoline vehicles can expect a 10% to 20% fuel economy loss in city driving and 15% to 33% on short trips in cold weather, and hybrids typically 20% to 40% in city driving and 25% to 45% on short trips. Its reasons:

Cold fluids

Cold engine oil and other drive-line fluids increase friction in the engine and transmission.

Longer warm-up

The engine takes longer to reach its most fuel-efficient temperature, which hurts short trips most.

Heat and defrost

Heated seats, window defrosters and heater fans use extra power.

Tires and air

Tire pressure drops in the cold, and denser cold air adds drag at highway speeds.

Winter gasoline

Winter blends can have slightly less energy per gallon than summer blends.

Battery

Battery performance falls in the cold, which on hybrids also affects regenerative braking.

From fueleconomy.gov's Fuel Economy in Cold Weather page, read November 2, 2026.

Getting closer to the rated numbers

Fueleconomy.gov's cold-weather advice: park in a warmer place such as a garage, combine trips so you drive less often with a cold engine, keep warm-up idling short (it notes most manufacturers recommend driving off gently after about 30 seconds), use seat warmers and defrosters only as needed, check tire pressure regularly, use the oil your manufacturer recommends for cold weather, and remove roof racks when you are not using them.

Year-round, it says aggressive driving (speeding, rapid acceleration and braking) can lower gas mileage by roughly 15% to 30% at highway speeds and 10% to 40% in stop-and-go traffic, that mileage usually decreases rapidly above 50 mph, and that an extra 100 pounds in a vehicle could reduce mpg by about 1%.

2027 Lexus RX MPG FAQ

What MPG does the 2027 Lexus RX get?

Lexus.com lists 22 city / 29 highway / 25 combined mpg for the RX 350 with front-wheel drive, 21 / 28 / 24 with AWD, 37 / 34 / 36 for the RX 350h hybrid, 27 / 28 / 27 for the RX 500h F SPORT Performance, and an 85 MPGe estimate for the RX 450h+ plug-in hybrid.

Which RX gets the best gas mileage?

Among the gas and hybrid versions, the RX 350h: lexus.com and fueleconomy.gov both rate it 37 mpg city, 34 highway and 36 combined, with standard all-wheel drive. The RX 450h+ plug-in hybrid is rated in MPGe instead (85 on lexus.com).

What is the RX 350h's MPG?

Lexus.com gives the RX 350h EPA-estimated ratings of 37 mpg city, 34 highway and 36 combined, the same figures as fueleconomy.gov's 2026 RX 350h AWD record.

What MPG does the RX 500h get?

Lexus.com lists 27 mpg city, 28 highway and 27 combined for the RX 500h F SPORT Performance, which uses a 2.4-liter turbo hybrid rated at 366 net combined hp with DIRECT4 all-wheel drive. Fueleconomy.gov's 2026 RX 500h AWD record shows the same figures.

Does the Lexus RX need premium gas?

The fueleconomy.gov records for the 2026 RX 350, RX 350 AWD, RX 350h AWD and RX 500h AWD all name premium gasoline. The owner's manual and fuel-door label of a specific RX give its fuel requirement.

Is the RX 350h available with front-wheel drive?

Not on lexus.com's current RX lineup: all four RX 350h trims it lists are all-wheel drive. The gas RX 350 is offered with front-wheel drive or AWD.

Are there EPA ratings for the 2027 RX yet?

When fueleconomy.gov was checked on November 2, 2026, it listed 2026 RX records but no 2027 RX and no RX 450h+. The 2027 figures lexus.com quotes for the RX 350, RX 350h and RX 500h match those 2026 EPA records. For a specific vehicle, check the EPA figures on its window sticker.

Why is my RX's MPG lower in winter?

Fueleconomy.gov says conventional gasoline vehicles can expect a 10% to 20% fuel economy loss in city driving in cold weather, and hybrids typically 20% to 40%, because of colder fluids, longer warm-ups, cabin heating, lower tire pressure, winter gasoline blends and reduced battery performance.
